I AM HYPE - My Most Anticipated Content - 2020 Edition

2020 is going to be a big year for content. Unlike 2019 which was the year of the finale (Game Of Thrones, Star Wars, and the MCU all had their current forms “end”) - 2020 is the year of big new movies and content. Don’t freak out though, I’m still showing up and showing out for my franchises - in fact more than half my list is sequels! So let’s jump into my most anticipated content of 2020. Some of it you may know and others you may not! I’ve broken it down by video games, movies, Tom Hanks, and TV.

GAMES

The Last Of Us Part II (Game - May)

It’s been seven years since the first Last Of Us game blew everyone’s minds with it’s incredible characters, moving story, shocking violence, and powerful statement on just what a video game can be. Well, now it’s back and from what we’ve seen so far it looks epic in every way. If Red Dead Redemption II re-defined what a video game narrative can be - I’m expecting this game to do the same. The gameplay released has been intense, the game is so epic in scope it takes two discs to play, and most of all the protagonist Ellie looks like she is ready to kick ass, kiss her girlfriend, and slay some monsters and some tunes on the guitar.

Halo:Infinite (Fall)

The launch title for the new XBOX console also just happens to be a soft reboot of my second favorite video game franchise of all time (first is GTA). I’m eagerly anticipating this not just because it is surely going to have amazing graphics and show off the shiny new console - but because the last game in the series was NOT GOOD. Never before has a sequel/remake had to do the heavy lifting of launching a console, regaining fan trust, and being incredibly fun and entertaining.

MOVIES

Tenet (July 17th)

Christopher Nolan’s always brings the heat. I remember seeing his last movie Dunkirk in theaters and almost jumping out of my chair in the final action because of how tense it was. Well, he’s back with a movie that looks hugely ambitious (shot it in seven countries!) and pretty damn mind-blowing. It looks like an espionage thriller with time travel/manipulation elements (think Inception) and features a stacked cast including John David Washington (from Black Klansmannn), Robert Pattinson, and Kenneth Branagh. I caught the prologue for it in December and the whole thing just looks intense in the best ways. Smart, thrilling, blockbusters don’t get any better.

Fast 9 ( May 22nd)

At this point you know what this franchise is about: over the top action and then more over the top action. However Fast 9 has one massively crucial task and if it doesn’t get there, well shit, I don’t want to think about it. IT HAS TO SET UP THE FAST 10 MOVIE TO HAVE A SPACE ELEMENT. The franchise “ends” with 10 and if we don’t see Vin Diesel driving on the rings of Saturn, I’m going to need to “Tenet” myself back to 2001 to forget this franchise existed.

Dune (December 18)

Full disclosure to all your Sci-Fi nerds and cultists - I’ve never read this book. Maybe I’ll tackle it this year. Or maybe I’ll just wait til director Denis Villeneuve and cinematographer Roger Deakins cook up some of that Blade Runner 2049 magic with another science fiction tale. The cast here is loaded with Javier Bardem, Timothee Chalamet (shoutout to the Tim’s out there), Oscar Issac and many more holding it done. I’m ready for that big screen science fiction action baybeeee!

Top Gun: Maverick (June 26th

I always laugh when people make fun of Tom Cruise for being “crazy” or a “scientologist” or whatever. Who cares! Let him live! Specifically let him keep making incredible action movies with practical effects that take your breath away. I’m in for this movie for the flight sequences alone. I guess I’m also in for the soundtrack and the fact that actor Glen Powell (who plays one of the fighter pilot) is a favorite in our household.

Wonder Woman 1984 (June 4th)

My mind was not blown by Wonder Woman, but I’m pumped for this one - mostly because its first trailer is a propulsive blast of energy and sold me on the movie right away. I’m essentially hoping for a super-heroine version of ATOMIC BLONDE aka all kickass action scenes and 80’s needle drops.

Shia.jpeg

The Tax Collector (TBD)

2019 was the year that Shia Labeoff showed his sentimental side in movies like “Peanut Butter Falcon” and “Honey Boy.” 2020 is the year we get back to full psycho Shia and I’m all for it. From director David Ayer (“End Of Watch”) the film is a gritty gangster drama that I’m not sure will be good but I’m sure Shia will be interesting in it. Let’s go Shia! Keep challenging yourself and your fans!

5 Bloods.jpeg

Da 5 Bloods (TBD)

In 2006, Spike Lee made the amazing and underrated “Inside Man.” He cashed in the success of that movie with a war movie “The Miracle Of St Anna” which was poorly well received. And now the cycle repeats itself - Spike Lee won his first Oscar with “BlackKklansman” and now he’s back with another war epic - “Da 5 Bloods.” The film tells the story of a group of Vietnam Veterans who return back to Vietnam to find their squad leader’s remains and buried treasure. The cast is a powerful mix of black actors including Chadwick Boseman, Jonathan Majors, Delroy Lindo, and Clarke Peters. I’m rooting for Spike!

TOM HANKS

-  Yes, he has his own category because he has 3 movies all which sound like fascinating stories that will speak to our modern life through the many different genres.

Greyhound (May)

Hanks plays a WWII submarine commander battling German U-Boats in the Atlantic while dealing with his own self doubt and questions of faith. This basically sounds like “War Hanks,” which if you’ve seen “Saving Private Ryan” is a great Hanks. Submarine movies are always super tense affairs and I can’t wait for this one.

BIOS (October)

Sci-Fi Hanks doesn’t pop up often, but when it does (like in Cloud Atlas) it almost always speaks to our current era through bold stories. This film BIOs takes place in a post apocalyptic wasteland and sees Hanks playing an inventor and the last man on earth building a robot to protect the life of his beloved dog after he dies. I’m not crying science fiction tears you are.

News Of The World (December)

Hanks re-teams with “Captain Phillips” director Paul Greengrass for this story about a journalist who must escort a young girl to her relatives in the aftermath of the American Civil War. Greengrass specializes in bringing a gritty realism to human stories and my hope is that by by tackling both journalism and civil strife in American - we’ll get a great story that’s revelvant to today’s world!

TV SHOWS

hbo-lovecraft-country.png

LoveCraft Country (TBD)

This one was on my list last year and of course is back again. A magic realism take on racism - the show is adapted from the book of the same name and chronicles a family’s experiences with racism and institutionalized magic in civil rights America. I loved actor Jonathan Major’s work in the 2019 movie “The Last Black Man In San Francisco” and I’m looking forward to his work here. The show also comes from executive producer Jordan Peele and I hope he is able to conjure his social commentary of “Get Out” with some genre thrills.

Y The Last Man (TBDs)

Based on one of my favorite comic books - this story is about what happens to Yorrick Brown, the last man on earth after all the males suddenly die. He navigates a female dominated world with his monkey sidekick. It sounds like “The Handmaid’s Tale” meets “The Walking Dead,” which is enough to get me to tune in. It airs on FX sometime this year.

Westworld (March 15th)

Westworld is a challenging, confusing, and also action packed with amazing ideas and kick-ass sci-fi action. The new season is a “soft-reboot” for the series with most of the action taking place outside the park in a futuristic vision of the year 2052 complete with robots, gleaming cities, and a very angsty Aaron Paul getting in the mix with the hosts.

Barry (TBD)

Believe me, I was surprised as anyone to discover that a “comedy” series with Bill Hader playing a hitman who gets into acting is actually a “comedy” series with kick-ass action, huge laughs, and amazing characters like the god tier character of NoHo Hank. I can’t wait to see where this zany black comedy goes in a new season.

Good-Lord-Bird.jpg

The Good Lord Bird (February 16th)

I’ve always been fascinated with John Brown, the famed abolitionist and who took up arms against the government before the civil war began. Sure, there are other shows that I’m geeked about (FX’s “Devs” and Amazon’s “Underground Railroad) being the standout - but John Brown is a lightning rod figure and these are lightning rod times, I’m pumped! This mini-series on Showtime sees Ethan Hawke play John Brown, “Hamilton’s” Daveed Diggs play Frederick Douglass, and Wyatt Russell as J.E.B. Stuart the man who took John Brown down. I hope this story is insightful and action packed.

There you have it. All my picks. I’m sure I’m missing something. Last year’s top pick was AD-ASTRA and it didn’t disappoint! What are you looking to this year? What did I miss?
